Detection methods
Acoustic listening
Listen for leak-related sound along accessible pipe routes.
What this method contributes
Escaping pressurised water may create sound that travels through a pipe or the surrounding material. An engineer compares suitable listening points and considers background noise, pressure, pipe material and depth. The findings help focus further tests or access decisions.
Understand its limits
A quiet result does not rule out a leak. Soft pipe materials and noisy sites can reduce useful sound.
A useful result needs the right conditions and context. The method is considered alongside the pipe layout, the symptoms and other findings, rather than treated as a guarantee.
Before the visit
Mention times when traffic, pumps or other equipment make the area noisy.
From the result to the next step
We explain what the observations support, what remains uncertain and whether further checks or access are appropriate. A hidden pipe still needs physical access for repair; specialist equipment does not remove that practical requirement.
